Coach Coop Featured in Bed Stuy Art Series
As you walk through Bed Stuy you may see some new public art installations. We’re proud to see Barry’s portrait and sentiments included in a series called As Quiet As It’s Kept, We Thrive: Stories & Portraits from the Heart of Bed Stuy. This multi-year project is coordinated by Bailey’s Cafe, a vibrant non-profit community space that delivers intergenerational arts initiatives from its home on Malcolm X Blvd.
This series features voices of those who have seen Bed Stuy change and continue to build the community’s vital character. Thank you to Stefanie Siegel of Bailey’s Cafe, and Pia Monique Murray who conducted the interviews and Marienne “Yen” Thomas who painted the portraits.
What do you hope and dream for Bed-Stuy?
Barry Cooper: “I hope that Bed-Stuy will start to take care of the people that have been with Bed-Stuy as long as they could and can be. There's generations of families who have been with and in Bed-Stuy since the 60's and I just hope that Bed-Stuy understands that people in the community are loyal to her.”
